Chapter 1: The point that Graff and Birkenstein is trying to get across and trying to teach is to help us become better writers. They are also trying to say that we have to be clear in what we are saying and state all the facts, and not to complicate it so much by adding too many details. The reason why they gave us the templates to work with is so they can help us get started in what to say in the beginning and work our way through.
Chapter 2: Whats happening in chapter 2 is that they are now teaching how to write an effective summary. When you are trying to summarize a short story for example your basically paraphrasing the whole thing into your own words and still talking about the story. To prove my point, in the book it says “A good summary, has a focus or spin that allows the to fit with own agenda while still being true to the text you are summarizing”.
Chapter 3: The essential part about this chapter that Graff and Birkenstein is pointing out in ” The art of quotation” is that they shouldn’t be too sloppy writing with quotes. You should be moderate and not put too many quotations otherwise it will be seen as plagiarizing and the reason why people quote their arguments, to prove they didnt just imagine it as if saying “there you see its right here”.
