They Say I Say Chapters 4-7 summary’s

In chapter 4 of “They Say I Say” Graff and Birkenstein are describing on how to respond, in ways of agreeing, disagreeing or both. So, this chapter is just trying to tell us how to react to other’s argument’s, and that when you deliver a good, clear, and strong amount of evidence from research you have done, but also also putting in your own original thoughts and facts will make it an even more sound argument, which is also very important. Now, the most crucial part is to not put too much details in the beginning so you wont have anyone getting annoyed or confused wondering whether you agree or not with what you are trying to say.

In the Fifth chapter, Graff and Birkenstein are trying to helping us look for signs or signals to spot in paragraphs or stories, to know who is saying what. For example, how they used Mantsios’s passage by pointing out some word’s that he contradict’s and also voicing his opinion on the view he’s describing. Finally, when using voice markers as discussed in the last part of the chapter, it is used to not confuse the readers whether or not the writer is summing up their own opinions or confirming another writers work.

What is being said, in the sixth chapter is that there are always gonna be negative comments, or people who do not agree with what you are writing. It may think you are not good enough but it is exactly the opposite these kind of comments help you become an even stronger writer by integrating their criticisms into the writer’s work. By adding the critiques input into their work it does not only enhance their credibility but it also show’s other reader’s that they can ask questions and not agree like some wide-eyed dreamer.

In chapter 7, Birkenstein and Graff interpret ways on how to answer the questions of “So What, Who Cares”, should explain and broaden the idea of why it matters. “Rather than assume that audiences will know why their claim matter, all writers need to answer the “so what” and “who cares” question.” What they meant with that is, you shouldn’t just assume that the audience will know what the claim means or they will find out soon enough. The writer should give them a reason to care like how writer cares, and what would benefit.
